This is an alter for performing the fire ritual, or "goma." Also, the word "in" means "branch temple." Ritsu-in is a branch of the main Tendai temple on Mt Hiei, the Enryaku-ji. It is located in Sakamoto on the edge of Lake Biwa, and the goma is performed every day at 11AM by Shunsho Ajari.
Is this an altar, and if so, is it the kind that might be found in a lay practioner's home or something special found in a monastery or temple?
